With growing government interest in electronic vehicle registration (EVR)
throughout the world, Mikoh has now expanded its Smart&Secure product range
to include tamper-evident RFID security for EVR applications. 

EVR greatly enhances registration enforcement, particularly through the use
of RFID in combination with other traditional paper-based documentation. EVR
tags can be monitored as vehicles pass under readers at normal driving

Law enforcement 
Readers can be placed at tollgates, underpasses and other convenient
locations to automate the monitoring and enforcement of registration
compliance. Additionally, law enforcement personnel can be equipped with
handheld readers to check up on tags while documenting traffic violations
and in other 'traffic stop' situations.

But, as Mikoh points out, tamper-indication technology is imperative in EVR
applications to safeguard against RFID tag thefts and fraud.

Costs of non-compliance 
Thousands of unregistered vehicles cost the US and other governments
substantial amounts, and these are down to non-compliance and inadequate
enforcement policies.

According to Andrew Strauch, vice president of product marketing and
management for Mikoh Corporation, "EVR is an extremely viable RFID business
model that combats lost registration revenue and fraud while reducing
enforcement operating costs."

Fraud prevention 
Mikoh Smart&Secure disables the EVR tag if tampering is detected in any way.
Physically compromising or removing a Smart&Secure tag damages a dedicated
tamper detection circuit, and alerts the authorities' roadside or handheld
RFID readers at the every opportunity. This will help prevent tags from
being stolen, removed and reapplied to other vehicles not matching the
original registration.

EVR systems can also ensure process efficiency in complying with different
vehicle-specific rules and laws. EVR RFID enables automatic validation of
vehicle identification data, thereby reducing the cost of otherwise
labour-intensive enforcement systems, according to Frost & Sullivan industry
analyst Priyanka Gouthaman: "Unlike standard license plates, EVR RFID tags
cannot be easily moved from one vehicle to another due to tamper-indication
technology like Smart&Secure."
