Folks in Boston who ride on public transportation will have to pay an extra
20% if they don't use the new RFID-equiped Charlie Card. The MBTA has
already said that they plan to keep travel data generated by the CharlieCard
for 14 months.

The MBTA will hike subway and bus fares Jan 1. and levy surcharges on riders
who do not obtain plastic Charlie Cards that will be distributed free next
month. The changes also reduce costs for some passes and transfers. Here's
how it breaks down:
Costs hikes
* Subway increase: 45 cents, to $1.70 from $1.25 (additional surcharge
of 30 cents for non-Charlie Card transactions).
* Bus increase: 35 cents, to $1.25 from 90 cents (additional surcharge
of 25 cents for non-Charlie Card transactions).
Cost savings
* Elimination of transfer costs: Combined subway-bus commutes will
cost $1.70, down from the current $2.15.
* New monthly LinkPass: $59, down from $71 for current combo pass.
* New weekly pass: $15, down from $16.50
